Stone Lithography

Article text
Prepared and inked limestone ready to go through the press

Stone Lithography is a beautiful printing technique that faithfully reproduces the drawn or painted line. The image is drawn on a slab of limestone that undergoes a series of chemical processes before a print can be taken by passing the stone through a litho press. Once fixed on the stone the image can be repeatedly printed. I do not have the equipment to do this in Shetland and have learnt the process on weekend courses at the magnificent Edinburgh Printmakers who run a series of printmaking courses with excellent tutors throughout the year.
