Edition of 20

Mother Carey's Chickens is an old mariners name for Storm petrels. It is a derivation from medieval latin, mater cara/ mother of Christ. Sailors could often predict the onset of a storm as they saw these birds ahead of a squall or poor weather front. The English name, petrel, derives from St Peter who allegedly walked on water hence the name Storm Petrel.
Shetlanders call them Alamooties which means oily and small, which they are.
